TGIF, lovely @eaasi-alliance members and @us-hosted users!
This is your friendly reminder that our next EaaSI Network call will be this coming Tuesday (June 4) at 4pm ET / 3pm CT / 1pmPT. As always the the pinned EaaSI Bimonthly Network Call Info topic in the Forum has the most up-to-date Zoom and calendar info.
This month I’d like to lead a discussion jumping off from our last call’s presented use case of running embedded EaaSI Environments on a live site. In that call we focused on challenges specifically facing the packaging and emulation of entire web sites and servers, but it also raised the visibility/viability of users encountering Environment resources outside of the EaaSI platform itself.
- How can EaaSI Environments be described/contextualized outside of EaaSI?
- Where/how can EaaSI draw in domain expertise to improve emulation and software description?
Hope to see you there! Please read below for general/async updates from the EaaSI team.
-
Program Manager search
- Interviews for the position of Software Preservation Program Manager occurred in May; the hiring process is moving forward
- Unfortunately that is all the detail that can be shared right now! Watch this space - we hope to be able to announce more soon
-
Development Updates
- Development work was unexpectedly and significantly slowed over the past month due to personal illness
- We are still hopeful for a new EaaSI release by the end of June
- We are preparing a lengthier/more detailed update, along with release notes for the expected upgrade, for Monday or Tuesday before the Network call, to allow for more detailed discussion or questions during the call; please watch the dev-update tag for that post

Documentation and support updates

The eighth and (for now) final EaaSI Training Module was released, on the topic of “Emulating Closed Systems”: EaaSI Training Module on "Emulating Closed Systems"
- (This module turned out to be particularly relevant to several recent emulation-related news items the past couple months, including:
-
A number of prominent additions have been made to the EaaSI User Handbook:
-
For system administrators: some guidance for monitoring the system health of Emulation-as-a-Service installations as well as guidance on the basic usage metrics automatically logged by EaaS
-
Directions for embedding Public Environments into arbitrary HTML pages using the Emulation-as-a-Service JavaScript client library developed by OpenSLX
-
An important note in Emulator Limitations to specify that the “Download Print Jobs” feature is currently only available in QEMU-based Environments
-
Context for our nascent “EaaSI Open Source Repository” effort (and directions to use this fledgling “archive” with certain FOSS operating system Environments!)
-
Finally, automatically-translated versions of the Handbook have been pushed using Argos Translate; initial trials include French, Spanish, German, Dutch, and Korean translations. These are machine-generated translations and we currently have extremely minimal capacity for quality assurance; feedback, suggestions, or collaboration to improve translation of the EaaSI User Handbook into languages beyond English are most welcome!

For further engagement on these or any other support or program-related questions, I have re-opened my “office hours” in the form of a bookable calendar! I hope this is a more convenient method of finding time to chat than having a standing call/time.

Conference roundup
- Euan presented a paper (authored by him and Klaus) on “Supporting the reproducibility of software-dependent research” discussing EaaS and the EaaSI program of work at the PV2023 hosted by CERN on May 3; presentation materials here!
- Ethan will be presenting a lightning talk on “Providing Access to Email Archives via Remote Emulation” on June 14 at the Email Archiving Symposium (June 13-15); registration is online and free!
- We’ll officially be back at iPres in the fall (Sep. 19-22), with several EaaSI-related papers accepted; mark your calendars!
