REMINDER: October Monthly EaaSI Network Call

Greetings @us-hosted users and @eaasi-alliance members!

This is your friendly reminder that our next EaaSI Network call is next Tuesday (October 4th) at 4pm ET / 3pm CT / 1pm PT! Zoom details, calendar invite, and running notes for the call can be found pinned here:

EaaSI Network Community Call Info

This month I will summarize and lead us in some discussion of the results of the Phase 3 Community Survey that went out this past month.

If you haven’t filled out the survey yet - there’s still time! Please take 10-15 minutes today if you have the chance to reflect a bit on the EaaSI resources that have been of use to you, and potential avenues for moving forward emulation services beyond the EaaSI platform itself:

EaaSI team updates for October 2022

  • Dev updates
    • I will be putting out a regular schedule of updates on EaaSI platform development and maintenance via the Program Announcements section of this Forum (once a month, approximately the third Wednesday of each month)
    • Please consult the EaaSI Development Update - September 2022 for the latest news on code development and debugging
  • Business modeling and service design
    • Seth, Euan and Jessica had their quarterly meeting with Yale University Library leadership in early September
    • Seth has been hard at work drafting a business plan for the Library’s review; we will provide further details of the business plan and Yale’s fiscal sponsorship of the EaaSI program as they are finalized
  • Staffing updates
    • Starting Oct. 10, Claire Fox will transition from EaaSI’s Metadata Analyst to a new (permanent!) role as Digital Preservation Librarian for Yale University Library. CONGRATS, CLAIRE!!! :tada: :tada: :tada:
      • Claire’s focus will be on providing and maintaining local emulation services and implementation of EaaSI workflows for Yale’s born-digital collections. She will continue overseeing the student configuration team as well, all as part of the exciting shift of Yale’s emulation/EaaSI-related activities from grant funding to a fully integrated and permanent fixture of digital preservation efforts.
      • While this technically means that Claire is no longer “EaaSI program” staff ( ) we expect little to change for now in our day-to-day work; we’re excited to keep working closely together, and to see the possibilities ahead for emulation and EaaSI workflow development with expanded capacity for Claire to represent and engage more closely with Yale’s collections!
    • And in case you missed it, our own Jessica Meyerson - along with Racquel Asante and Katherine Kim - has officially been appointed a co-director of Educopia Institute! CONGRATS, JESSICA!!! :tada: :tada: :tada:
      • You can read all about Jessica’s appointment and Educopia’s new leadership model here!
  • Yale University Library and EaaSI donate to the Arctic World Archive
    • In partnership with Piql, YUL contributed a reel of piqlFilm containing the data of representative samples of common computing environments - including Windows and Apple operating systems, office productivity software, and statistical analysis programs - to Piql’s AWA initiative. (These environments were created - and in several cases are exactly the same as the ones you all use, published from Yale - in EaaSI!)
    • The deposit ceremony including YUL/EaaSI’s reel took place earlier in September, with Seth in virtual attendance - you can read more from the Library’s press release here!
  • Conference updates:
    • SWHAP Days (Oct. 19-20)
      • Ethan, Claire and Kat Thornton will all be a part of Software Heritage’s two-day “SWHAP Days” hybrid workshop, taking place in Paris and online, on the challenges of archiving and displaying legacy software
      • This is a FREE workshop - you can check out the full program and register here if you’re interested in joining us!
      • SWHAP Days - Software Heritage
    • No Time to Wait 6 (Oct. 26-28)
      • Ethan and Claire will be giving EaaSI and software configuration-related lightning talks, respectively
      • full program should be out later this week
    • World Digital Preservation Day 2022
      • Nov. 3rd!
      • Keep an eye out for blog posts, published iPres papers, and other goodies from the EaaSI team

Reminder @us-hosted and @eaasi-alliance - we are meeting now! Hop on in to the Zoom if you are available
